Dear DD boys , This is AJ's mother (Jennifer). I have a few concerns about this Barstow BBQ. First, why do 20 to 40 yr olds?. want to hang with a 17 yr old? I find this a bit perplexing! Second, why would I want to send my son to a BBQ where I KNOW people will be drinking? I am sure that some of you might have children so please put yourself in my  position. Would you let your child go? If you all send me a post to explain why you want to hang with AJ , and convince me why I should allow him to go to a BBQ (let's be honest here, a party) where there will be alcohol then I promise to give it a good amount of consideration. I look forward to hearing from you. Have a good one!

Jennifer,

Welcome to DezertDimes!

Let me first say that you invited to the BBQ too!

I'm glad you asked all those questions.  You certainly are completely reasonable in having those concerns.
I'll do my best to answer your questions.

My names Evan, I created the site, I'm 26 &  a full time Electrical Engineer &  part time web designer.
AJ has been a part of DezertDimes for over 2 years, and is a key part of the group here.
DezertDimes is a large community, but most of the Southern California members have gotten to know each other well after posting online for years here,
and having multiple BBQ's.  Many of the people on this site know each other in person after meeting up on here about their shared interest in S10 trucks.
It is a good, friendly, responsible group, and I can vouch for many, many people on here that they'd look out for other members.

The upcoming BBQ is an event where we can all get together and talk about & offroad our trucks.
I won't lie and say that there will not be drinking there, but I can tell you from experience that at every BBQ we have had in the past that it is responsible and done by people of legal age.

It is not what I would consider a party, but rather a meetup of people with a common interest in these trucks who have all become friends regardless of location or age.

So in conclusion, I would be the first to put my name & reputation on the line to have AJ attend. I would personally responsible for ensuring that he has a good time and gets home safely, and will stop by and introduce myself on the way up to Barstow from my home in San Diego if it would make you feel any better.
I'm sure many other members here would do the exact same.

And, not to mention, AJ is our Official DezertDimes Photographer!

Hope I could help!

Evan

well aj,s mom.. jennifer, as the majorty of us are older well above 21. we like aj to come and hang out not necissarily because of age but because we are all enthusiasts of this particular brand of truck ( you can  think of it as our version of a hot rod) and jr. there is just as much of an enthusiast as the rest of us. we as a collective group are well beyond the days of "peer pressure". Yes we do drink beer, but are also responsible. i have a 10 year old daughter and when i drink i have a girlfriend who does not so fortunatley i have a designated driver.  as enthusiasts of the s-10 platform aj has actually brought some skill and knowledge of mechanical application to the table that even i as a 32 year old fabricator and mechanic did not posess. personally i dont think of aj as some kid we want to come and party with.. so much as i think of aj as an apprentice i have been trying to teach him aspects of fabrication that he may otherwise not have access to. and these bbqs. (not a party, as were not getting sloshed and puking on the lawn, those days are behind me thank god) give us the opportunity to check out each others work firsthand.
sincerely

Evan,
I appreciate your reply and just may take you up on the invite.  AJ is getting older and I need to allow him to "venture" out on his own some, but I am a fiercely protective Mommy! I couldn't live with myself if something happened at one of these BBQs and I could have prevented it in some way. As I said before, I appreciate the reply and will continue to think about letting him go.

MM,
AJ is a smart like cookie isn't he ( as long as it has something to do with mechanics). He does make me proud on occasion. If they could only base his grades on this stuff he might actually make it through high school. JK....(AJ you know I'm only joking). I appreciate you taking AJ under your wing and sharing your knowledge with him. If you read my reply to Evan than you know I am just trying to watch out for my kid. Thanks for the reply.

Count me in too Bruce. I'll need a cot so save one. I sent a message to dezertking from Buckeye AZ to let him know I work in Flagstaff and he can ride out with me so maybe him too. I need to post the pics of my spare tire rack and my new shackles I built but I'll do that later. What supplies do I need to bring?

Epic...

it gets better he he he

my correspondence with OFFROAD magazine, lets see if we can get jerrod jones to come to this epic bbq

 My names Jeffro.
As a subscriber to Offroad, I have noticed several times that you guys have mentioned you would like to build an s-10. I am inviting you to come take a look at what has recently become the number one s-10 enthusiast website. www.dezertdimes.com. If you guys are serious about building an s-10 check us out. As enthusiasts of the most hated trucks in the dezert we would love to help in whatever ways we can. In our forum you will find a welcome and positive atmosphere. (as ive seen you guys state differently about other sites). We pretty much have a library of information from fabrication to performance on the s-10/ sonomas and you will find a small legion of die hard friends of these trucks.
We at www.Dezertdimes.com regularly have bbqs and meetups to just be fans of the truck so come check us out.

He he he. So if you guys want to get a shop who builds stuff for the s-10, but doesn’t like em to help.. Or you can check out true fans who not only build the s-10 as a platform. But we also drive and love them.

Anyways. Thanks for the new direction in offroad, I love it and will keep subscribing. I am also including some pictures of my fabrication and our bbqs to show what we do over there.. Thanks

What's up Jeffro-
I checked out your site and that's awesome! I'd love to go out with you
guys sometime and get a story going!
Also, we are starting a new series in the mag called BUILD A BETTER...
where I will cover a bunch of vehicles (one per story per issue) and do
4-5 pages on what a typical good build would be. And we want to include
everything from suspension to air intakes to frame gussets or whatever
else each particular vehicle might need.
One of our first will in fact be an S-10. I'd love your help in guiding
me on what we should do to a completely stock one. I don't really have
any experience at all with S-10s, so I'd appreciate any advice you could
give me. And of course, we'll definitely be talking about the best S-10
website in the story...
